The Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering at UNIFEI (PPG-EEL) is associated with the Institute of Electrical Systems and Energy (ISEE) and the Institute of Systems Engineering and Information Technologies (IESTI). It offers MsC and PhD courses.

The Graduate Program was implemented in 1968 with an emphasis on Electrical Power Systems, focused on generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy, and has thus consolidated itself as one of the most developed in the country in this area.

In 1985, the MsC Course also began to be offered in the area of Industrial
Electrical Systems, one of the few in the country at the time. In 1986, a new program began to be offered in the area of Electronics, which was renamed to Automation and Industrial Control in 1992, as it was more appropriate to the research areas. However, due to the strong interaction between the areas of Automation and Industrial Control and Industrial Electrical Systems, those two areas were unified under the name Automation and Industrial Electrical Systems.

In 1995, the PhD Course in Electrical Engineering began in the area of Electrical Power Systems. In 2005, the Automation and Industrial Electrical Systems area was opened. Finally, in 2010, the Microelectronics area began to be offered.

Since the creation of the doctorate program in 1995, the program has undergone 6 triennial and 2 quadrennial evaluations by CAPES, where it was rated 6 in the 1998-2000 triennium and 5 in the other three ones, which demonstrates its quality. The program is committed to achieving a score of 6 in its next quadrennial evaluation.

The Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering meets the demands for graduate studies in electrical engineering in the country, and especially in the Southern of Minas Gerais State. Along with Santa Rita do Sapucaí, it forms the Electronics Valley, and in the Paraíba Valley (encompasses São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states).

The course is directly aligned with the strategic objective of the Institutional Development Plan of being one of the best universities in the area, through the generation and application of knowledge, which unfolds into the specific objective of being a national reference in teaching excellence in the courses it offers. Thus, the training of masters and doctoral students is based on the development of research and the promotion of the innovation capacity, often associated with research projects. Additionally, the program aims to promote research activities for educational, scientific and technological purposes, aiming to produce, expand and disseminate knowledge and skills.

The professors are encouraged to seek research and development projects of companies and agencies, aiming to meet regional and national needs in the areas of the program.

The program has been focusing its efforts on its internationalization. The program began offering courses in English, so that foreign students can obtain all the credits required for their MsC and PhD degrees. Students, both foreign and Brazilian, can write their dissertations and thesis in English, as well as their presentations.
